Dental Crowns
If you want a smile that’s your crowning glory, you may need a crown to cover a tooth. This helps restore it to its normal shape and size. Dental crowns make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance.
WHEN ARE CROWNS RECOMMENDED?
A crown can help strengthen a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t enough of the tooth remaining to hold the filling. Crowns can also be used to attach bridges, protect weak teeth from breaking, or restore one that’s already broken. A crown is a good way to cover discolored or badly shaped teeth.
Crowns are also used to cover dental implants. If your dentist recommends a crown, it is probably to correct one of these conditions. Your dentist’s primary concern, like yours, is helping you keep your teeth healthy and your smile bright.
DENTAL CROWNS IN JUST ONE VISIT!
You may have heard that crowns are now available in just one visit. No more multiple visits with temporary crowns while waiting for permanent crowns. At Broadway Dental, we are pleased to provide single-day CEREC crowns to our patients.
Thanks to CAD-CAM technology, everything from tooth preparation to fixing the final crown is done in a single appointment. Often, this is done within an hour or slightly more. CAD stands for “computer-aided design” and CAM for “computer-aided manufacturing.”
First, the dentist will examine your tooth and determine the appropriate treatment. It may require a simple filling, or a full crown, depending on how much healthy tooth structure remains. Next, the dentist will administer an anesthetic. Then, they will prepare your tooth for restoration by removing decay and unsupported tooth structure.
An optical impression will be taken of the prepared tooth with an intra-oral camera. Unlike traditional crowns, no “gooey impressions” are needed. The camera is smaller than the point of a ballpoint pen. The process only takes a minute or two.
CEREC’s 3D software takes the digital picture of your tooth and converts it into a 3-dimensional virtual model on the computer screen. The dentist uses their dental expertise to design the restoration using the CEREC program. Within a few minutes, a click of a button sends the design data to a separate milling machine in the office.
A ceramic block that matches your tooth shade is placed on the milling machine. In just minutes, your all-ceramic tooth-colored restoration is finished and ready to be bonded in place! The dentist will try the restoration in your mouth to ensure proper fit and bite.
Finally, the restoration is polished and bonded to the prepared tooth. No temporaries. No return trip!
