Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure or LANAP is an amazing breakthrough in Periodontal treatment. If you have been told that you need a gum surgery that will require a scalpel and sutures, there is a laser alternative that we can offer. If you are like 100 million other Americans, you could be one of the 50% that have Periodontal Disease. Periodontal Disease is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal Disease starts off as plaque which hardens and eventually turns into tartar or calculus. These calculus deposits harbor bacteria and cause the gums to become infected. In the early stages, this is called Gingivitis. Most people have varying degrees of Gingivitis which is characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss. In the later stages, Gingivitis progresses to Periodontal Disease. When Periodontal Disease is present, Periodontal pockets have formed, separating teeth from gums and the supporting bone structure. If left untreated, the infection becomes severe and the pockets deepen, resulting in tooth loss. The way to repair the damage is to get rid of the infection and close up the pockets. In the past this meant an invasive Periodontal Surgery. We are pleased that now we can offer a procedure that is minimally invasive and is a great improvement over standard gum surgery. We are also able to use this technique with implants that are Periodontally involved. This procedure is called, Laser Assisted Peri-Implant Procedure or LAPIP. Dr. Tozer is a LANAP procedure trained dentist.
